Spotlight On — Huna Highlights and the Hunger for More!Magic and miracles were everywhere as a small band of curious and adventurous folks came together 'ohana' style (in a family of choice) for three days of exploration and change. Experiencing Huna in the framework of the quantum biological human, we watched with delight as the weather mirrored our journey of discovery. Venturing in to what sometimes felt like the chaos and turmoil of our innermost being, we always came out the other side and discovered so much MORE of our own potential! Participants left the three-day Huna Retreat marveling at what human beings are capable of, with lives expanding on all fronts - physical, emotional and spiritual. Finding meaning in our lives can happen in the blink of an eye - if we're willing to look. In a place where we felt nurtured and cared for- with creature comforts in abundance and a context of safety - the invitation to press our edges and re-discover about ourselves what we'd left to languish for far too long, was like a long, cool drink of water for a thirsty soul. And this was just the beginning! What makes these retreats so powerful is experiencing the wisdom of the ancient Hawaiians in the context of who we are as quantum biological humans. We will continue to make space for those new to such experiences to have a gentle entry, as well as deepening experiences for those ready for the increasing adventure! Our next scheduled Huna Retreat is for Kona, Hawaii, November 14-18, 2005. Designed specifically for those who have completed at least one level in the Portals Passages intensives, this Huna experience will be wrapped around the notion of an Open Forum and shaped by those who choose to attend and engage. If you have already experienced a Portals Passages program intensive (Igniting the Self or beyond) or intend to do so before August of 2005, and want to be on our contact list for registrations, send us an email at Kona@WEL-Systems.com. We may not be able to choose our family of origin but we can choose with whom we continue to evolve. Join us in Hawaii for yet another extraordinary 'ohana' experience! Today's Thought

Grandmother's Room
by Mary Clarke I stand at the bottom of the stairs that lead to my grandmother's rooms and open my mind to the memories. I reach out and touch the carved balustrade. It feels friendly and warm as I trace its complicated design, my fingers getting lost in its deep, worn crevices. Beneath my feet I feel the rough ridges of the rubber matting, and its pungent smell drifts upwards, mingling with the tangy odour of lemon. Reaching the top of the stairs, I hear once again the whistling tea kettle drawing me towards the kitchen. I enter the room and see the teapot waiting patiently in its orange and yellow teacozy for the ritual of pouring and sharing. I listen for the scraping sounds of the metal garbage can being dragged over the cracked linoleum towards the table where it will serve as my chair. I can imagine the feel of my grandmother's loving touch as she lifts me onto it. I remember the welcome puckering of it as I am settled onto it. My grandmother's voice was gentle, like the softest caress of warm wind when she spoke. Her hair was iron-gray, but softened by the disarray of a bun put up without enough pins, soft wisps curling around her face. She spoke often and lovingly of a grandfather I had never met, making him come alive for me through her memories of him. They had met on the ship bringing them both to this country from Ireland. They had worked hard and long to keep this house and raise their five sons. A mist would come over her eyes and a visible ache in her voice as she spoke of the one daughter lost in infancy. Through a child's eyes, I once again look around at the bright, cozy kitchen. I do not see the weariness of the wallpaper, the frayed curtains or the sparsely-set table. I see only the brilliance of the afternoon sun reflected on my tiny porcelain tea cup. I see my grandmother pouring out the tea and placing two lumps of sugar on my saucer. One lump goes into the teacup, then, as if a prearranged signal has been given, my grandmother turns back to the stove while I slip the second lump into my pocket ... I can still see the twinkle that came into her eyes when she returned with her own tea, probably laughing inside at the "cat that swallowed the bird" expression on my face. I turn from the room and start back down the stairs. Through habit, I feel inside my pocket for that second lump of sugar, and, even though its not there, I can still remember how it felt inside my mouth; the rough texture of the crystals against the inside of my cheek. How my tongue would take quick darts around it, and how I could feel the grating sensation against my teeth when I could no longer hold back and had to bite through it. As I savoured the sweetness of that lump of sugar, I now savour the sweetness of my memories. They are surely snapshots that will always be worn with handling, but ones that will never fade. |
